Of course the best advice for products to use on your face always comes from a dermatologist who has
inspected your skin.
To follow is some basic information about facial scrubs.
There are two different types of facial scrubs. One involves
using a product that is mildly abrasive to 'polish' the skin on your face. Products containing oatmeal, almond meal,
honey, finely powered clay and finely powered citrus peel fall into this category.
The second is a chemical exfoliator such as Retin-A or an alpha hydroxy acid product
that act to buffer away the dead cells on the surface of your face.
And while a sea salt or sodium borate is a great scrub for the body, these products
are just too abrasive for non-physician use on your face. Microdermabrasion usually involves spraying the
face with salt particles but this is not a procedure that should ever be used at home.

have at 50'

To follow are some of our favorite recipes for facial scrubs. If you lack the
time or desire to make them yourself we have also included some ready made product recommendations.
- Oatmeal and Honey Scrub: the oatmeal provides the mild buffering
action while the honey acts as the carrier for the oatmeal. Combine 1/4 cup of uncooked oatmeal, 2 teaspoons of honey
and 1 teaspoon of warm water. Spread on your face (avoid the eye area) and neck using a circular motion and gently massage
for a couple of minutes. Rinse with warm water and follow up with a moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Honey and Clay Mask: Mix 2 tablespoons of honey with 4 tablespoons
of Kaolin or French Clay. The best type of clay to use is French clay. This is a fine quality green clay that
is used to tighten pores and absorb oil. If you can not find French clay, Kaolin clay is a good substitute.
This is a fine clay with a yellow tint. It is also known as China clay. Add enough warm water to make a spreadable
mask (between 2 - 3 tablespoons). Spread on your face avoiding the eye area and allow to dry. Rinse off with
warm water. Apply moisturerizer and sunscreen.
- Peppermint Clay Mask: Throughly
combine 2 tablespoons of French or Kaolin clay, 1 drop of peppermint essential oil and enough leftover, cooled green tea (a
great antioxidant) to make a thick but spreadable mask. Spread over your face and neck avoiding the eye area.
Allow to sit for 10 minutes, wash off and apply moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Almond/Citrus Scrub - combine equal parts finely powdered dried citrus
peel and finely powdered almonds. Make sure both are as finely powered as baby powder. Mix with a teaspoon of
glycerin and enough water to make a spreadable paste. Gently massage into your face and neck with a circular motion,
avoiding the eye area, for a couple of minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Apply moisturizer and sunscreen.
