These emerald earrings are easy to make and only require round nosed pliers and wire cutters for tools.

FIRST - Wrap your gold filled 24 gauge wire around a round object such as this hi-lighter so that you have three loops.  If you use a round object that is tapered make sure you mark where you wrapped your wire so your circle will be the same for both earrings.

SECOND - Wrap the tail of the wire around the circles making sure that you catch the other loose end in the wrapping process.

The emerald gemstone beads will cover this so don't worry if the wrapping does not look perfect.

THIRD - Using wire cutters trim the excess wire.  Use a pair of round nose pliers to flatten the cut end of the wire into the wire wrap so that the end does not scratch you while wearing the earring.

FOURTH - Use your fingers to reshape the wire loops into an oval shape and separate the three wires at the top.  This is where you will be placing your earring hoop.

THEN - String 2 1/2 inches of emerald gemstone beads onto a 10 inch length of the 34 gauge beading wire.

FINALLY - Wrap the strand of emerald gemstone beads around the bottom of the earring where you originally wrapped the gold filled wire.

Twist the ends of the beading wire together and tie into a small knot.  Make sure the knot is in the back of the earring.  Secure with a dot of clear, quick drying glue.

Attach the earring hoop to the top of the earring.  Our  aquamarine earring page has more complete instructions on how to do this.  Click to go there

First assemble your supplies:
  • round nose pliers
  • wire cutters
  • 20 inches of dead soft 24 gauge round gold filled wire.  Cut the wire in half - 10 inches for each earring.  24 gauge wire is very easy to bend with your fingers.
  • Enough emerald gemstone beads for 5 inches strung on beading wire.  This will really vary depending on the size of the gemstone bead.  Often gemstone beads are sold temporarily strung - usually in 15 inch increments.   I used 3mm round button cut emerald gemstone beads with high luster crystal transparency.
  • 2 gold filled earring hoops
  • 34 gauge beading wire - 10 inches for each earring.  I used silver beading wire.

NOTES REGARDING MAKING THESE EARRINGS:
  • The only really maddening part of making these earrings is wrapping the emeralds on the gold filled wire earring form.  Here is what I suggest:
    • on one side leave a tail of about three inches and wrap the beading wire around the earring form a couple of times so that you still have a tail at that end but the gemstone beads can not slip off.
    • Firmly hold onto the other tail as you wrap the gemstone beads around the earring so no beads slip off that end.
    • When you are done wrapping the beads wrap both tails around the beads a couple of times (like you are sewing them to the earring form).  End with the beading wire at the back of the earring.  Then twist the beading wire tails together, tie a little knot and use the quick drying glue.
  • If you look at the finished picture of the earring you can see on the right hand side where I had wrapped the beading wire around the earring form a couple of times to secure one end.
  • Follow these instructions and your emeralds will be very sturdily attached to the earring form.  I shook my earrings vigorously about 30 times and threw them on a carpeted floor a few times and no gemstone beads cme loose ( I did not bother to use the glue but I recommend using it to be 100% sure that your knot will not come undone).
  • Also, the 34 gauge beading wire is cheap and usually comes on a spool of 24 yards so you have plenty of wire with which to practice.  If you are not happy with the way the emeralds are arranged on the earring form cut a new length of beading wire and start over again.  The earring form is just there to support the gemstone beads.  The emeralds are the focal point of these earrings so make sure you are happy with the way they are arranged.

These emerald beads are top quality and are very expensive.  If you can not find them email me at maire@nourish-your-spirit.com and I will put together a kit for you to make these earrings.

I will include four feet of the 24 gauge gold filled wire and two feet of the 34 gauge beading wire so you have plenty for practice, two gold filled earring hoops and 5 inches of the same type of emerald gemstone beads as shown in the picture above.

The cost for the kit to make two earrings would be $100.
