Ever wonder what the difference is between charms, spells, talismans and amulets?  Here is a quick guide to their functions followed by a few different suggestions.

Amulets and talismans often are worn as decorative jewelry.  An amulet's job is that of protecting it's wearer from any type of harm or trouble.  Amulet's have a general purpose and normally you will find your amulet by instinct - a piece of jewelry will catch your eye and be irresistable.

Talimans have a more specific purpose - usually that of love, protection or money drawing.  Two good examples are that of a rabbit's foot and a horseshoe.  Both are ancient talismans.

The rabbit's foot is supposed to bring good luck to it's owner.  A horseshoe is hung  pointing downward over your front door to protect your home from bad luck.

Spells involve the harnessing of your emotional force in an attempt to bring about change in your circumstances.  There are usually three components to a spell:
  • a desired result
  • visualization of the object of your spell
  • a chanted incantation to bring focus to your desire.

Charms have their basis in old folk superstitions.  Basically, charms are objects that are meant to bring a desired result.  Ever look for a four leaf clover when you were young?  Although in folk magic all types of clover have magical properties, four leaf clovers are especially powerful.

Four leaf clover was said to enable it's finder to see fairies, detect witches and recognize evil spirits.  Anyone wearing a four leaf clover was said to be protected from bad intent.  If a woman put a four leaf clover in her shoe the first man she meets will either be her future husband or have the same first name as her future husband.

Here are some examples of protective spells and charms:

In a darkened room anoint a red candle with rosemary essential oil. Rosemary protects those who use it against evil spirits, danger, witches and fairies.   Light the red candle and while wearing your amulet close your eyes, relax and breathe deeply for a few moments.  When you feel that your emotions are stilled conjure up an image of that from which you feel you need protection.

When you feel ready, then chant the following:

For protection from (name the source from which you feel threatened), I now pray,
Let this evil turn away.
Protect me night,
Protect me day,
And keep this affliction well at bay.

Repeat daily as needed.

An excellent charm to carry with you for protection is a black velvet bag containing a sprig of rosemary and fresh iron nails.  To keep evil from your house you can also use the iron nails to form your initials over your front door jamb.  In Europe it is common to nail an iron horseshoe to your door to prevent the evil eye from entering your household.

The following is a candle protective ritual.  Light a purple candle and circle it three times while chanting the following spell:

Oh Power to be

Hear my prayer to thee

Oh Goddess, day and night

Encircle me with your protective might

Three times around this circle bound

Make all evil sink into the ground

Another effective protective charm is to keep on your person is a white pouch containing a silver dime or an Eye of Horus amulet (ancient Egyptians worn the Eye of Horus for protection), 3 citrine crystals and a pinch of salt.  The salt can be table, kosher or sea salt.

Plums are fruits of protection and rhubarb is a vegetable used to protect your household.  Keep these in your home.

To make a charm for protection while traveling put equal amounts of basil, fennel, rosemary, mustard seed, rock salt and one small clear crystal quartz in a purple pouch.

To follow is a spell for protection while traveling:

Oh Goddess of the forests and skies and seas,

Draw near and lend your protection to me

Against all troubles and maladies of any kind,

Bring me to my destination safe and on time
